To evaluate the salt tolerance of madders (Rubia tinctorum L.) in different planting methods, a glasshouse experiment was conducted at National Salinity Research Center, Yazd, Iran. Treatments including salinity at 5 levels (1.5, 5, 10, 15, and 20 dS/m) and planting methods (seeding and root cutting) were arranged as factorial experiment in the form of CRBD with three replications. Plants were nourished with Hoagland's solution. After 4 months, plants were harvested from soil surface. Results showed that the effect of salinity on fresh and dry weight of shoot and root were significant. Increased salinity level resulted in reduction of fresh and dry weight of shoot and root. Application of the highest salinity level (20 dS/m), reduced shoot fresh and dry weight by 67% and 71%, respectively. Irrespective of salinity, in root cutting method, shoot fresh and dry weight increased 12.3% and 17.5% compared to seeding method, respectively. Root cutting method could also increase root fresh and dry weight more than seeding method. Root cutting method increased root fresh and dry weight by 15.7% and 20.2% compared to seeding method, respectively. In conclusion, root cutting method is recommended for madder production under moderate saline conditions (up to 8.4 dS/m).
