Abstract

To evaluate the effect of plant growth promoting bacteria (P. fluorescens) on yield and yield components of wheat, a split plot experiment with randomized complete block design and three replications was conducted in Mehran, Iran, during 2009-2010 growing season. The main plots were allocated to cultivars (Chamran and Verinak) and sub-plots contained fertilizers treatments (without fertilizer application; application of P. fluorescens alone; 50% of recommended chemical P-fertilizer; P. fluorescens and 50% chemical P-fertilizer; 75% chemical P-fertilizer; P. fluorescens and 75% chemical fertilizer; 100% recommended chemical fertilizer; P. fluorescens and 100% chemical fertilizer). The results indicated that cultivar had a significant effect on grain yield, number of spike per m2, thousands grain weight, and plant height. Verinak grain yield (4235.4 kg ha-1), number of spike per m2 (378.9 spikes) and thousand grain weight (40.5 gram) were 6.7%, 3.1% and 10%, respectively, more than Chamran cultivar. Also, mixture of chemical fertilizer with P. fluorescens had significant effect on yield and yield components. Indeed, mixture of 75% chemical fertilizer and inoculation with P. fluorescens produced the highest grain yield (4858.3 kg.ha-1), number of spikes per m2 (406.3 spikes), number of grains per spike (39.1 grains), biological yield (11481.3 kg.ha-1), and grain protein (11.8%). There were no significant differences between application of 75% and 100% chemical fertilizer combined with P. fluorescens inoculation. Interaction effect of cultivar and chemical fertilizer on grain yield, number of grain per spike, biological yield, and plant height was significant. The maximum grain yield (5223.3 kg ha-1) was produced by Verinak cultivar with combination of 75% chemical fertilizer and P. fluorescens and the minimum grain yield (3113.3 kg ha-1) was produced by Verinak cultivar without chemical fertilizer and without P. fluorescens inoculation. Therefore, by reducing 25% chemical fertilizer application, P. fluorescens inoculation and selection of Verinak cultivar can still produce acceptable grain yield.
