Abstract
To study the imbalanced fertilization and to optimize fertilizer use in watermelon farms in the north of west Azerbaijan Province, Iran, we used Compositional Nutrient Diagnosis (CND) and Deviation from Optimum Percentage (DOP) methods. Achieving optimal performance is possible by balancing the nutrients. Nutritional indicators are used to diagnose nutritional disorders and the subsequent optimal use of chemical fertilizers. This research covered 110 fields during one cropping season (2019) and soil, leaf, and water samples were collected and analyzed and yield was also measured. Nutritional elements including N, P, K, Fe, Cu, Zn and leaf Mn were determined by standard laboratory methods. Then, according to the CND system method, the standard norms for N, P, K, Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn and residual elements (Rd) were determined as 2.92± 0.29, 0.66± 0.23, 2.82± 0.18, 2.69±0.21, 1.6± 0.38, ± 0.3, -2.49± 0.29, -2.63± 038, -3.37±0.23, -2.49±0.32, -3.92±0.43 and 6.61±0.11respectively. Finally, the Deviation from Optimal Percentage (DOP) and Compositional Nutrient Diagnosis Index (CND) were calculated for each nutrient element that the average optimal concentration of elements (reference numbers) for elements was obtained by both methods and the results of each of the DOP and CND indices were compared. In both methods, nitrogen and potassium were the macro elements, and manganese was the most unbalanced among the micro elements, and the results of both methods were similar. According to the studied indices, all orchards with low relative yield were in unbalanced conditions in terms of nutritional elements.
