To study the effect of the application of municipal solid waste compost (MSWC) on iron and manganese concentrations in the soil under maize cultivation, a factorial experiment with randomized complete block design including two factors: a) amounts of municipal solid waste compost in four levels of zero, 30, 15, and 60 tons ha-1, and b) two application times of MSWC i.e. one year and two years. The study was performed with three replications. The results showed that MSWC had a significant effect on reducing of pH and increasing of cation exchange capacity and organic carbon (p≤0.01). MSWC significantly increased soil total and DTPA extractable Fe and Mn. (p≤0.01). The highest amount of DTPA extractable iron and manganese were, respectively, 12.03 and 18.52 mg kg-1, in the 60 t ha-1 treatment in the second year of the study, showing an increase of 275.89% for Fe and 45.75 percent for manganese compared with the control. Results showed that MSWC had a significant effect on increasing Fe and Mn concentration in roots and shoots (p≤0.01). The highest amount of iron and manganese uptake was observed in the 60 t ha-1 treatment in the second year, with increases in root and shoot of, respectively, 69.59% and 81.48% for iron, and 46% and 37.52% for manganese, as compared with the control. The highest amounts of bioavailable iron and manganese were obtained in the same treatment and year, with 280% and 33.33% increase for, respectively, Fe and manganese, as compared with the control. Also, the highest amount of Transfer Factor from soil to shoot was obtained for iron and manganese in the 60 t ha-1 treatment in the second year, Compared with the control, this amount was more by 70% for Fe and 30.18% for manganese. Besides, there was a significant and positive correlation between the total and DTPA-extractable Fe and Mn in the soil and the concentrations of these elements in root and shoot.
